‘A Study on graphic system for custom typeface’

This studies the production of custom typeface. Typography is the visual result that gives a form to a language. The forms are determined by the choice of typeface, and the communication method and expression vary widely depending on the form. Thus, the choice of typeface is one of the important factors in the design process.
The development of digital technologies has begun to produce new expression methods and the production of typeface has been much generalized than before. Not only professionals but also ordinary people have been able to easily create for themselves letters with computer. However, such an increase in convenience did not only have positive results. Although many more typefaces have existed than before, they failed to satisfy the needs of designers who tried to find the appropriate typefaces in order to express the content they wanted. Thus, the number of designers who tried to create typefaces for themselves has increased and then custom typefaces naturally began to be created. However, it is easier to produce typeface than before in progression. As a result, custom typefaces have poured out in large numbers and then there has been a flood of indiscriminate typefaces.
It is the most essential to provide designers with the suitable direction so that they can easily design typefaces in the context of appropriate basis. Thus, this study aims to propose the production system of custom typeface so that the designers who are interested in producing typefaces can systematically create typefaces with ease. The production system of custom typeface proposed by this study produces the assembly system that can develop and examine the conventionalized typeface forms to another form by using the system pallet based on
historical grounds. In other words, this study provides the modular system of assembly method based on basic elements and structure of typeface. In addition, it does not draw letters from the beginning. It determines the basic modular and then provides the direction based on in order to be able to refine.
It is expected that the system proposed by this study enables designers to reduce the required time in the process of typeface production and at the same time to simulate by easily applying the details of typeface. Additionally, it can derive a new form combination by combining different elements to create new typefaces with other hybrid forms different from those with traditional context. Thus, it is hoped that typefaces with unprecedentedly interesting forms can be designed by users.
